The center undertakes the main tasks of researching, collecting, preserving, valuing, and disseminating all films and cinematic documents, and in this capacity, it is specifically tasked with the following:
- Conducting and promoting all studies, research, and publications related to cinematic art
- Managing the cinema halls belonging to the center and preparing new halls across the entire national territory: (Algiers, Bejaia, Tizi Ouzou, Annaba, Constantine, Bechar, Tlemcen, Tiaret, Khenchela, Batna, Sidi Bel Abbes, Blida). Other halls are in the process of rehabilitation.
- Encouraging the implementation of a policy aimed at preserving and documenting cinematic heritage in conjunction with other national institutions active in this field.
- Preserving documents and equipment related to cinema and all films deposited with it, as the center contains a documentation center (a library specializing in cinema) whose doors are open to directors, students, researchers and professionals in the field of cinema.
- Maintaining a permanent inventory of cinematic works
- Enriching film collections by encouraging new film productions
- Establishing a library specializing in cinema
- Disseminating films and documents for artistic, educational, or cultural purposes, using all appropriate means, particularly through screenings, exhibitions, publications, lessons, and lectures.
- Creating a database related to Algerian and foreign cinema
- Publishing books, periodicals, and all publications aimed at introducing and disseminating national cinema.
- Organizing screenings and events related to cinema
- Encouraging the development of film clubs across the country
- Taking all measures aimed at promoting the distribution of cinematic works and public access to the center's theaters
